Friday 13 February

0215 Meet at the Botanical Gardens on Clarkehouse Road. Please leave room for the coach to park.

0230 Depart from the Botanical Gardens

0745 Easyjet flight EZY2295 leaves Luton

1055 Flight arrives in Keflavik

1200 Fish and Chip Lunch at Grindavik

Golden Circle

Þingvellir National Park - rifting between American and Eurasian plates and its causes

Geysir and its causes

Walk along gorge to the Gullfoss fault-guided waterfall

Overnight at the Fosshotel Hekla

Saturday 14 February

Geysirs, Waterfalls and Glacier Walking

Seljalandsfoss (waterfall you can get behind)

1130 Iceland Volcanic Eruption Centre

Skógafoss (60m waterfall)

Sólheimajökull Glacier: walking on the glacier with experienced activity company www.adrenalin.is

Visit coastal features at Reynishverfi/Dyrholaey including spectacular basalt columns like a small scale Giant's Causeway

Possible brief stops at Rootless Cones and Laki lava

Overnight at the Hotel Laki

Sunday 15 February

Glaciers, Waterfalls and Icebergs

Skaftafell National Park Centre

View Svartifoss which flows spectacularly over black basaltic columns

Visit very impressive Svinafellsjokull glacier to view moraine, crevasses and pro glacial lake. Also cross-cutting relationships and characteristics of dykes, sills and lava flows in cliff beside glacier and evidence of obsidian in chilled margins of sill

Jökulsárlón Ice Lagoon – awe-inspiring colours etc of icebergs: walk round the lagoon towards the ice sheet. (Where the last James Bond Film was made)

1500 Boat trip amongst the icebergs

Walk back to the black beach to find natural ice sculptures

Climb Europe’s largest moraines for view over ice-dammed lake

Back to the Hotel Laki

Monday 16 February

Going Underground and the Blue Lagoon

Laki lavas

Visit Vik Woollen Mill for shopping

Caving in a lava tube with experienced activity company

1500 Blue Lagoon swim, steam rooms and sauna

Return to Reykjavik for a brief tour of the city including the Perlan and Hallsgrimskirkja for views over the city.

1930 'Eat all the pizza you can' at local pizza restaurant

On to the Hotel Baron

Tuesday 17 February

Departure Day

1130 Easyjet Flight EZY2296 departs for Luton

1425 Flight arrives at Luton Airport

1900 (approx.) Arrival back at the Botanical Gardens, Sheffield
